Reflections on Simonee’s Journey

Our latest 5-Day Ghost Free Journey  took place from November 12 – 16 with Simonee Chichester  from Toronto.  In was an amazing 5 days with lively discussion around several issues,  ranging from dairy/egg alternatives to life-changing relationships with companion animals.

Early on in her journey,  while searching for the “perfect cheese substitute”, Simonee had an encounter with an employee at a grocery store who had been vegan for 10 years. He shared his thoughts about his own vegan journey – that it was not about looking for replacements but rather embracing what is new. This led her to an insight, “I found what he said profound because it spoke to our unwillingness around change…maybe it is less about mimic and more about changing course?”

On Day 3  Simonee talked about her passion for yoga, “[It is] all about mindfulness, observing, non- judgment, being in the moment and slowing down enough to really be present to every occasion in life.  She was able to extend this to her GFJ, and reminded us that we all can, no matter where we are in our journey …..being present to your food, enough to understand wholeheartedly where it comes from.”

On Day 4 we primarily dealt with the social issues surrounding vegans – dining out with friends and family and the issue of  ‘personal purity’ vs. effective advocacy. These seem to be common issues for many people who have taken the journey. Some wonderful discussions took place, with lots of encouragement and support. Some wise words were shared by Abigail, a previous GFJ participant, “We are so accustomed to seeing food as a vehicle for acceptance and togetherness, that I sometimes feel that the more important matters get distorted”.

On Day 5 we talked about our bonds with our companion animals and how those relationships influenced our decisions to make changes in our lives. Simonee shared the stories of the loves of her life – animals she had rescued and formed intense relationships with. Again, we had many others joining in, sharing their own stories – truly a beautiful day, with so much love expressed.

Simonee ended her journey with these words,  “As I sign off my GFJ I can truly say things are different and I feel changed. I’m not sure how this will look tomorrow or in the next year but I do know that I am not going back either. Hope that makes sense.”

There were so many wonderful comments and suggestions during each of the 5 days.  We hope that you will take the time to read the full posts of the 5-Day Ghost Free Journey.
