“I strongly endorse the efforts of Liz Marshall to raise the consciousness of our society to the plight of countless animals in the machine of our modern world. Since my grandparents’ time we have increasingly divorced ourselves from the other living things in our world. This is not only to our shame, it is to our detriment. In our race for ever cheaper products we have ruined ecosystems, polluted our air and water, and damaged our health and potentially our future through our use of pharmaceuticals.”
Robert Bateman
Wildlife Artist, Environmentalist, Naturalist
In the early 1960’s, Robert Bateman developed the style that would make him one of the world’s foremost artists depicting the world of nature. In the 70’s and 80’s, his work began to receive critical acclaim and to attract an enormous following. He is the recipient of countless academic honours and major awards. Bateman’s work has been celebrated in films, books, museums, private collections, and major exhibitions.
Robert Bateman’s art reflects his commitments to ecology and preservation. Since the early 60’s, he has been an active member of naturalist clubs and other conservation organizations. This involvement is now on a global scale. He has become a spokesman for many environmental and preservation issues and has used his artwork and limited edition prints in fundraising efforts, which have provided millions of dollars for these worthy causes. He says, “I can’t conceive of anything being more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. And its crowning beauty is the natural world. I want to soak it up, to understand it as well as I can, and to absorb it . . . and then I’d like to put it together and express it in my paintings. This is the way I want to dedicate my work.”.
